What is the Chinese new year?

Chinese new year is a holiday that’s celebrated at the beginning of a new year according to the Chinese lunar calendar. It is considered one of the most important holidays for Chinese families. This holiday is being celebrated with family gatherings, gift-giving, and eating symbolic foods. All of this is focused on bringing good luck for the coming year.

In China, the lunar calendar is used to determine traditional holidays like the Chinese new year. The lunar calendar is based on the phases of the moon, which has a shorter cycle than the sun. Their new year is never on the same day every year. It typically falls somewhere between January 21st and February 20th. The celebrations last for a whole month. It is a chance for the Chinese families to come together and share their happiness.

Here are some common traditions associated with the Chinese new year.

Cleaning houses and new clothes


Before the first day of the new year, it’s a custom to clean the houses completely. They said that by cleaning the houses they prepare them for accepting the good luck of the coming year and throw away the bad luck of the previous year. They complete all the cleaning before the first day of the new year because there’s a chance that you might throw the good luck of the new year out of your house if you are cleaning it on the first day of the new year. Also, there is a custom of wearing the new year and red color is encouraged because it is associated with happiness. Wearing black isn’t allowed because of its association with death.

Decorating the houses:

Another popular custom is to decorate the houses. They hung up signs and posters on the doors of their houses with the Chinese word fu written on them which means good luck and happiness. Buying flowers for home is also a custom because it symbolizes happiness for the spring and the coming year.

Eating customary food, meeting with friends and family, gift-giving, and giving envelopes filled with money is also a custom. These envelopes are presented to the children and the non-married members of the family. You are not allowed to open the envelope instantly, open it after leaving the house. It is also a custom to make 8 or 9 dishes for the Chinese new year’s eve dinner. In the Chinese language, the word Eight means happiness, and the word Nine means long-lasting.

 Also, every year is associated with one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. These animals are presented in decorations. Chinese people believe that those who are born in the month of a specific animal have the characteristic traits of that animal.
