But Manson wasn’t harmless to the industry. These insane convictions, along with Manson’s near-complete influence over his group of followers, led the group to commit a series of gross murders in 1969 that became immortal in America’s collective imagination over the years.

Tate rented her house with her husband, filmmaker Roman Polanski at 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles in summer 1969. In the film Valley of the Dolls (1967), Tate was better known, though Polanski was new to the success of Rosemary Baby (1968). In Once Upon a Time, Tate watches The Wrecking Crew (1968), Dean Martin’s action film, one of her last films. The scene where the ticket-taker (Kate Berlant) doesn’t remember Tate, then asks Tate to take a picture next to the film poster to let people know who she is, refers to the fact that her star hasn’t yet risen entirely.

The pair were seen hobnobbing with Hollywood actors in the late 1960s, including actor Steve McQueen (Damian Lewis) and singer Mama Cass (Rachel Redleaf). Tate and Polanski will engage in a party at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion, a scene that speaks of Hollywood’s charming, unconcerned life. While this scene is true to the moment’s heart, it’s not true. There were no models dressed as hawks at the 1969 Playboy Mansion, as Hefner only purchased the house in 1971.

Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian ordered his followers Charles “Tex” Watson (played in Austin Butler’s film) to go home on Cielo Drive in 10050 and kill everyone they found. Previously, the house belonged to Terry Melcher, a record producer who refused to sign Manson’s recording contract. Then Polanski and Tate, who were eight months pregnant, rented the property. When the Manson family members came to the house, Polanski was away and working in Europe, but Tate was home alongside a Polanski associate, Wojciech Frykowski, a famous hairstylist who was a friend of Tate’s former friend, and his girlfriend Abigail Folgen, Samantha Robinson, and Jay Sebring.

Outside the house, the cult met Steven Parent, a teenager who visited and killed a friend on the lane. Then the four Manson followers broke into the house and horribly killed Tate, Folger, Frykowski, and Sebring, each with knives and a rifle. On her way out, Atkins smashed the word PIG at Tate’s front appearance blood. There’s no bloodshed. Manson and a group of fans broke into the wealthy Rosemary couple’s house and Leno LaBianca in Los Angeles the next night, tied them up and left them behind to kill a group of fans.  Manson was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death, but his sentence was reduced to life custody following California’s 1972 prohibition. All the others were convicted and received similarly decreased sentences except Kasabian, who was the primary witness to the prosecution and received immunity.

The killings sent shockwaves to American culture, many of which remain felt even after Manson passed away in 2017. Manson was closely linked to California’s counterculture, while through his perverted ends, the cultic leader distorted those values. But for many, these horrendous killings, as well as other crucial events such as Altamont’s disastrous concert (a major unprepared California concert festival that killed four), contributed to the collapse of the movement, with hopes for a new and better world withdrawing in the face of shocking anarchical violence. These are the ideas Tarantino plays for in Once Upon a Time, implying a scenario where things would have changed with his visual mark.
